Smoky quartz is caused by irradiation while the mineral is being formed. Quartz is one of the most abundant minerals at the Earth's surface. Its chemical composition consists of one part silicone and two parts oxygen. Quartz belongs to the trigonal crystal system when at room temperature. This mineral is defined as a value of 7 on the Mohs scale of hardness.
